The 20th Annual Schooner Wharf Battle of the Bars was held Sunday Aug 4th. An impressive $17,756 was raised for local charities A Positive Step of Monroe County and Florida Keys SPCA.
Billy Davis, Executive Director of A Positive Step of Monroe County, said “APSMC is very grateful for the funds received from the 2013 Battle of the Bars. This money will make possible the 2014 Idle Hands summer youth employment program.”
Tammy Fox-Royer, Executive Director of the Florida Keys SPCA added: “The support from this year’s Battle of the Bars will go directly toward caring for the animals we serve. Our resident animals and our staff will all sleep easier tonight knowing we have the support of these generous teams”. .
“It’s been 20 years of fun and hilarity, and we are proud to say that with the enthusiasm and generosity of the bar and restaurant teams the Battle of the Bars has raised over $280,000” said Evalena Worthington.
In all, thirty-two teams from bars and restaurants in Key West and the Lower Keys turned out in some very imaginative team costumes ready for Battle. Competition was fierce as the 7-person teams ran the obstacle course, poured and served a margarita, recycled bottles, rolled and tapped a keg, and drank beer.
Top Honors went to “Bourbon St. Boozers”, of Bourbon St. Pub for the fastest time in an extremely close final round. Second place went to the Schooner Wharf Bar’s own “Schooner Wharf Bar Liquor Preps”. And rounding out the top three was last year’s winner “Big Shots” from Shots and Giggles.
This year the Deepest Pockets title was awarded to Irish Kevin’s “Lucky Charms”,, who contributed $3,650. Hard Rock Café was awarded second place, and an Honorable Mentions went to Southernmost Beach Café
The ever popular Most Outrageous Team Costume award went to Southernmost Beach Café’s “SOMO 911”; six polyester-clad officers and a roller skating, boom box-toting antagonist. Second place the Salute/Blue Heaven team ‘Party Fowl”. Honorable Mentions for Costume were awarded to Irish Kevin’s “Lucky Charms”, Hard Rock Café’s “Heavy Muddlers”, El Meson de Pepe’s “Meson Muddle Cluckers” and Shots and Giggles’ “Big Shots”.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the event, a special Platinum Award was given to the teams who have participated in all twenty “Battle of the Bars”. In recognition of their outstanding dedication and team spirit plaques were given to: Hog’s Breath Saloon-“Reservoir Hogs/Pigpen Partiers” The Bull and Whistle-“Bad News Bulls/Raging Bulls”’801 Bourbon- “Smash N Drag”, and Schooner Wharf Bar- “Funky Schooner Wharf/Liquor Preps”.
