THE
JOHNNY RAWLS BAND
It’s
a long way from rural Mississippi in international blues recognition,
but then Johnny Rawls has never yet found a road he was afraid to
travel. Between touring with such legends as Z.Z. Hill, O.V. Wright, and
Little Johnny Taylor as well as forging a career of his own on the rough
and ready southern blues circuit known affectionately in the
African-American blues community as the “chitlin’ circuit,” Rawls has
spent the better part of twenty years on the road. He is well touted for
playing his sweet soul’d fusion of blues, R& B, and emotion-laden pop
stylings for audiences throughout the south.
He has a music career that has included
being O.V. Wright’s and Little Johnny Taylor’s band leader, founding a
record label Touch, recording and producing his own work as well as
other artists, while keeping up with his “white line fever”
performances.
Rawls’ musical tastes are varied with a
style that is between gospel, blues, and good hard soul music, seasoned
generously with lush pop structured melodies as well as hard-driving
rhythmic impetus, that kicks with rock & roll energy.

HENRY TURNER, JR.
Henry Turner Jr., lead vocalist
and guitarist for the band, is the driving force
behind this band’s appeal. Henry’s influence on the band comes
somewhat from his early musical influences. Blues and jazz greats
like B.B. King, Bob Marley, and George Benson have allowed Henry
to bring forth a unique perspective to the realm of reggae. The
style of the music, as quoted by Henry, is “… an infused sound …
also an infusion of R&B /Reggae with some jazz chording.” This
unique style has allowed the band to go where other bands cannot.
Jonathan “Boogie” Long, bassist and vocalist, the newest member of
the band, is proficient with a number of instruments (piano,
drums, trumpet, French horn, sax, flute, clarinet, and mandolin)
and has taught lessons on them. Ronnie Houston, the senior member
of the Flavor band, is a profound R&B drummer. With various
influences, including artists such as James Brown and Buddy Rich.
Ronnie has toured the United States and Europe since the early
1970s. Ronnie has added an element of stability to the Flavor

Charlie Vegas
Who
is Charlie Vegas? The man himself calls his stuff “space age retro”
Think early 50’s rock meets classic blues, only different. It’s swing,
rockabilly, jump and some R&B all melded together Charlie style. Backed
up by the hot New Blues Combo, Charlie Vegas’ cool sounds will blow you
away. Some folks think of The King when he shows up in his funky black
outfit. A lot of others say he’s a lot of Kings, from B. B. to Freddie.
Charlie and the New Blues Combo re-interpret big blues classics from
giants like Muddy Waters and T-Bone Walker. His personal “Joisey’ style
tosses in hints of old blue eyes, little sinister Sinatra-isms. Speaking
of “Joisey” one panting fan swears when she watches Charlie, she thinks
of The Boss. One night with Charlie may not be enough, but it’s a change
to soak up some retro roadhouse cool, authentic down and dirty hip
swingin’blues.

addition to the power trio rhythm section known as The Root Band, add

Legendary Performer and International
Recording Artist
HARMONICA RED & THE NEW HEARD
“He’s
not called Harmonica Red for nothing. A Louisiana native hiding
out in Nashville, Red (aka George Heard) is a singular harp
stylist, seamlessly blending his Bluesy boiling wails inside a
rockin’/jumpin’/shufflin’ gumbo.” -- Tim Carmen, The Houston Post
Harmonica Red & The New Heard is a band unlike any other,
featuring George “Red” Heard’s remarkable talent on the harmonica
with 30 years of an amazing musical career under his belt. These
world-class entertainers play the Blues right -- with sometimes a
Louisiana Zydeco bent or other times with a touch of rockabilly.
To get his unique and extraordinary sound, Red stacks his Lee
Oskar harmonicas on top of one another, two or three at a time,
sliding between them to get notes you can’t make on one. It’s been
said that he “plays the mouth organ as if he’s either reaching for
the vault of a funky cathedral or luring the damned out of a deep
circle of hell.”*
Red spent time in Key West 30 years ago, and then played with
heavyweights like David Allan Coe, Little Feat and War. His
phenomenal harp work has been hailed as scintillating and a wonder
– be sure to catch their one-of-a-kind show at Schooner Wharf!
