The threat of high winds and rain
couldnt keep 41 teams of seven to approach the frontlines during
the 14th Annual Schooner Wharf Battle of the Bars on Sunday.
Fresh-faced innocents opposed seasoned, pickled veterans to
demonstrate their skills in mixing a margarita, tapping a keg,
recycling, and serving customers for the much-coveted victory.
Mayor McPherson launched the festivities, saying that the bar and
restaurant industry is the heartbeat of this community. Four-time
winners T.K.s Trouble then marched their torch around the course
in a challenging display to their foes.
However, they were eventually toppled by Half Shells Raw Bar
Rowdies, who were the victors with a time of 1:51. Close on
their heels was Drunken Conch Farmers, with less than 1/100th
of a second behind. Third place went to Fat Tuesdays Fatty
Boombaladies.
In an unexpected upset, Sebagos Naked Mexican Revolution took
home the trophy for Most Outrageous Costume, defeating last
years champs from the Bourbon Street Complex. Costume competition
was fierce this year, as combat ware ranged from pigs, to angels, to
beach bums, to leprechauns.
This years Battle raised an unprecedented $15,700 for Big
Brothers/Big Sisters of Monroe County, bringing the all-time
total to nearly $120,000. As always, the judges can be bribed
with donations to allow teams into the rounds. Intoxicating
generosity was abundant throughout the Battle, where teams and
captains heaped up the donations. Most notably, Irish Kevins
Horni Leprechauns and La Te Das Inebriators ensured their
places in the last round line-up, as did many other teams.
