Minimal Boats, Maximum Fun in the Sun

The weather was just about as perfect as it gets for the 22nd Annual Schooner Wharf Bar Minimal Regatta, held Sunday may 27th. Thirty-one unique home-built watercraft provided wet, wild, wacky float or flounder fun. The docks were packed with spectators and speculators as the competitors negotiated the course set up in the Key West Bight.

Taking first place in the Open Division was Steven King on his own Viking themed vessel Skull Crusher. Steven has entered every Minimal Regatta, placing in several categories before breaking his maiden with this, his first, overall victory. Second place went to Katie Leigh on Jeep Sea, designed by Jeep Caillouet. In the kayak Division, the winner was defending champion Canadian Dean on designer Cliff Hartman�s The Wisterians. Coming in second was Max Schwab on Never Sink.

Additionally, there were prizes awarded in several other categories based on creativity, costuming, sinking, and on-the-water antics. In true Schooner Wharf tradition the main emphasis was on fun and camaraderie (with plenty of libations to keep things exciting!)

The local VFW post 3911 sold poppies and helped out with registration at our 22nd Annual Minimal Regatta on Sunday. Over $1,200 was raised from the Minimal Regatta entry fees and tee shirt sales. The proceeds will benefit homeless and disabled vets in Monroe County as well as sending games and food to our troops in Afghanistan.
