JOHNNY RAWLS
It's
a long way from rural Mississippi in international blues recognition,
but then Johnny Rawls has never yet found a road he was afraid to
travel. Between touring with such legends as Z.Z. Hill, O.V. Wright, and
Little Johnny Taylor as well as forging a career of his own on the rough
and ready southern blues circuit known affectionately in the
African-American blues community as the "chitlin' circuit," Rawls has
spent the better part of twenty years on the road. He is well touted for
playing his sweet soul'd fusion of blues, R&B, and emotion-laden pop
stylings for audiences throughout the south.
|
|
His music career has included being O.V. Wright's and Little Johnny
Taylor's band leader, founding a record label "Touch", recording and
producing his own work as well as other artists, while keeping up with
his "white line fever" performances.
Rawls' musical tastes are varied with a style that's between gospel,
blues, and good hard soul music, seasoned generously with lush pop
structured melodies as well as hard-driving rhythmic impetus, that kicks
with rock & roll energy.

Legendary Performer and International
Recording Artist
HARMONICA RED & THE NEW HEARD
"
He's
not called Harmonica Red for nothing. A Louisiana native hiding
out in Nashville, Red (aka George Heard) is a singular harp
stylist, seamlessly blending his Bluesy boiling wails inside a
rockin'/jumpin'/shufflin' gumbo." -- Tim Carmen, The Houston Post
Harmonica Red & The New Heard is a band unlike any other,
featuring George "Red" Heard's remarkable talent on the harmonica
with 30 years of an amazing musical career under his belt. These
world-class entertainers play the Blues right -- with sometimes a
Louisiana Zydeco bent or other times with a touch of rockabilly.
|
|
To get his unique and extraordinary sound, Red stacks his Lee
Oskar harmonicas on top of one another, two or three at a time,
sliding between them to get notes you can't make on one. It's been
said that he "plays the mouth organ as if he's either reaching for
the vault of a funky cathedral or luring the damned out of a deep
circle of hell."*
Red spent time in Key West 30 years ago, and then played with
heavyweights like David Allan Coe, Little Feat and War. His
phenomenal harp work has been hailed as scintillating and a wonder - be sure to catch their one-of-a-kind show at Schooner Wharf!

BEN PRESTAGE
Born
the grandson of a Mississippi sharecropper, Ben Prestage grew up
in the swamps of south central Florida and mixes Mississippi
Country Blues with his own take on Florida Swamp Blues. Wailing
with a frenzy and ferocity that could rival a full-blown ensemble,
he delivers a passionate blend of the Blues reflective of his
rural upbringing.
Labeled as "one of the three best unsigned performers in the
world" at the 2006 International Blues Challenge, this musical
multi-tasker plays a cigarbox guitar -- a stereo guitar and bass
strings that can be played independently at the same time. Then
Ben added four foot pedals that can be manipulated by the heels
and toes of both feet to play a drum kit.
This muddy-water-meets-black-water stew has led him to perform
from California to the Carolinas to the Florida Keys, and his own
brand of Blues leaves bottles empty and dance floors full wherever
his music takes him.

LOVE LANE GANG
Making their Key West Debut at Schooner Wharf The Love Lane Gang. This versatile group plays music that spans generations, as well as embodies them. The emphasis is on swing: classics from the 1920s-1940s, done in a refreshing new style that incorporates the Hot Club approach with island flourishes.
Dust Bowl ballads, jug band stomps, old school country from Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, rockabilly and surf music classics and little-known gems, and tunes from Sixties stars like The Beatles and The Kinks, all fit in alongside original songs that sound like they could have come from any of those eras.

Offbeat instrumentation like mandolin, accordion, ukulele, washboard,
and a kazoo horn section add to familiar guitar, bass, and harmonica,
creating a broad musical palette which they use to color their
performances.
But you needn't pay too much mind to all that serious musical analysis - it's all just plain fun! Come on down to see and hear what it's all about!
