Key West�s local �athletes� turned out on Sunday during the island�s own Summer Games -- The 23rd Annual Schooner Wharf Battle of the Bars. An impressive $18,080 was raised for local charities Habitat for Humanity and the Boys and Girls Club, and the overall total is now $319,667 raised by this high-spirited charity event.
Dan Dombroski, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, said, �All of the money raised today is a significant down payment for our home at Bayview and the positive futures for the youth of Key West. It's great to be a part of locals helping locals. That's what we do here."
And Mark Moss, Habitat for Humanity�s executive director, added, �The day was a rousing success! We'll dedicate the funds raised today to our repair program, 'A Brush with Kindness,' which helps seniors age safely in place. Our thanks to Schooner Wharf Bar, sponsors, all of the great teams, volunteers, and staff."
27 teams from Keys bars and restaurants were pumped up to win and waged a fierce competition. Excitement was high as the 7-person teams ran the obstacle course, poured and served a margarita, recycled bottles, rolled and tapped a keg, and drank beer.
"Bourbon Boozers" from Bourbon St. Pub took home the championship title, along with a trophy and bragging rights, with a final round time of 1 minute, 53 seconds. Team �Salute! Pride� from Salute! On the Beach captured second place, and third place went to Half Shell Raw Bar's "Raw Bar Rowdies".
The coveted Most Outrageous Team Costume award went to 801 Bourbon with their �Bedrock's Finest Bartenders� cartoon theme; second place went to Sebago Watersports' �Sebago Sled Team" with their Jamaican Olympic sled team costumes and sled; Southernmost Beach Caf� took third place with the "SoMo Street" nod to Sesame Street; and fourth place was given to the home team, Schooner Wharf's "Schooner's Ark", with animal costumes and "ark".
Seven Honorable Mentions for Costume were awarded to The Bull & Whistle's "Whistle Blowers", Cork & Stogie/SUP's "Cork Boards", Hog's Breath's "Piggy Marley", Rumor Lounge's "Rumor Regulators", Sloppy Joe's "Sloppy's Cuban Olympic Swim Team", Waterfront Brewery/Conch Republic Seafood Company's "Team Dominate", and Willie T's "Fireballs".
For the second year, the Deepest Pockets award went to Salute!'s "Salute! Pride" and Danger Charters' "Danger Log Jammers" took second.
�It�s such a fun get-together. Everyone was extremely generous, all in the spirit of giving,� said Evalena Worthington, event organizer. �The energy level and excitement to win the bragging rights were amazing. All the teams and spectators were extremely giving, and the creative costumes made it an even more fun and festive day.�
