A fun day was had last
Sunday at the 25th Annual Schooner Wharf Battle of the Bars. Bars and
restaurants competed in teams while raising money for local charities.
The Battle raised $12,885 this year for the Southernmost Boys and Girls
Club and the Sister Season Fund. The overall total is now $351,839
raised by this high-spirited charity event.
Dan Dombroski, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club, said, "The
Battle of the Bars by far is our favorite fundraiser. To witness so many
people having fun and donating to the non-profits is humbling. This year
for us was extra special, since we were a part of the event's 25 year
anniversary. This event has put its fingerprints on the lives of many
people in this community."
Added Julie Hanson, President of Sister Season Fund, "We are so excited
about being a part of Battle of the Bars this year. All of the proceeds
raised for our organization will be put right back into our Key West
community, for residents working in the hospitality industry."
Twenty-two teams from Keys bars and restaurants were pumped up to win
and waged a fierce competition. Excitement was high as the 7-person
teams poured and served a margarita, ran the obstacle course, recycled
bottles, rolled and tapped a keg, and drank beer.
Bourbon St. Pub’s “Bourbon Boozers” took home the championship title for
the third year in a row with a final round time of 2 minutes, 2 seconds,
besting last year's time. Team “Green Machine” from The Green Room
competed for the first time and captured second place. Third place went
to Mary Ellen’s “Miss Mary Ellens”.
For the fourth year in a row, The Deepest Pockets award (the team that
contributes the most money) went to Salute! On the Beach’s “Beach Bums:
SHARK ATTACK!!”. Dante's "Dante's Corrupt Care Bears" was awarded second
place, Danger Charters’ “Stranger Danger” took third place, and Hogfish
Bar and Grill's "Stock Rock Hogs" took fourth.
The coveted Most Outrageous Team Costume again went to Sebago
Watersports with their “Southernmost Frank's Magic 21” (multiple costume
changes), second place went to 801 Bourbon Bar's “801 Hillbillies”, and
third place went to The Stoned Crab's "Shiver Me Quiver". Seven
Honorable Mentions for Costume were awarded to Charlie Mac's "Notorious
P.I.G.", Dante's "Dante's Corrupt Care Bears", The Green Room's "Green
Machine", Square Grouper's "Best Buds", The Stoned Crab's "Shiver Me
Quiver", Mary Ellen's "Miss Mary Ellens", Salute! on the Beach's "Beach
Bums: SHARK ATTACK!!", and Schooner Wharf's "Schoonervana".
